The space dedicated to the Moroccan Royal Surfing and Bodyboarding Federation (FRMS) offers the public an introduction to its objectives, values, and commitments to the development of surfing in Morocco and across Africa.
The partnership between Taghazout Surf Expo and the FRMS reflects a shared ambition to professionalize and structure the surf industry while fostering the transmission of knowledge and values.

Who Owns the Waves? Localism and Surf Spot Management: Perceptions, Tensions, and Pathways for Dialogue

Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm

Who has the right to surf a wave? What happens when locals want to protect “their” spot? Do unwritten rules really exist? Between respect, tension, and community spirit, localism in surfing is a topic of ongoing debate. This participatory workshop brings together surfers, researchers, federation representatives, institutional actors, and the public to collectively explore perceptions of localism, the tensions it generates, and the community dynamics that emerge from it. An open and honest exchange, without taboos, designed to connect real-life experiences with academic perspectives. Facilitated by Karim El Mahjoubi, Christophe Guibert, and John Van Den Plas (scientific team of Taghazout Surf Expo).

How to Become a Competition Judge

Friday, October 24, 2025, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Becoming a surf judge is more than learning the rules: it is about observing the waves from a new perspective, combining technical expertise, analytical skills, and commitment to the surf community. This workshop will explore the essential role of judges through the inspiring journeys of Elraoui Mohammed and Wail Regragui, two figures who exemplify complementary paths. Elraoui Mohammed represents the path of technical expertise and formal training: from his FRMS and ISA Level 1 certifications to judging national and international competitions, he now trains new judges, sharing precision, methodology, and rigor. Wail Regragui embodies the path of field experience: a former competitor and coach, he transformed his practical knowledge of waves into official recognition validated by the FRMS. The workshop will cover the technical evaluation of waves and maneuvers, the application of judging criteria according to FRMS/ISA standards, and official competition procedures. Participants will also learn the importance of rigor, fair play, and teamwork, while gaining best practices to develop as a judge. A special focus will be placed on Fedala Surfware, the scoring system designed by FRMS to support judges. It provides accurate and transparent performance evaluation and allows competitors to follow their score, ranking, and points needed to reach first or second place in real time. During the Surf Expo, participants will have the opportunity to apply what they have learned in a practical exercise as a shadow judge during the Taghazout Surf Expo Junior Challenge (see below), experiencing firsthand the process of evaluating performances in an official competition setting.

Surf: Coaching Practice, Strengthening Impact (Official Guidelines – Powered by SDRT)

As part of drafting the official guidelines for the management of surfing and designated surf beaches, the Regional Tourism Development Company (SDRT), in consultation with the Moroccan Royal Surfing Federation (FRMS), has launched a participatory process with professionals in the sector.
Several meetings, organized with the support of the Taghazout Surf Expo Association, gathered input from surfers, schools, clubs, and local operators to enrich the official guidelines proposed by the SDRT. The consolidated document combines institutional provisions with real-world practices, designed to be professional, structured, and adaptable. It applies equally to sports practice, associations, and commercial surf tourism, thus addressing the entire ecosystem.

The overarching goals are threefold:

Safety: Ensure the physical safety of surfers, coaches, and beachgoers through strict standards of supervision, equipment, and risk management.
Structure: Professionalize the sector by clarifying the roles, responsibilities, and operating standards of all stakeholders (sports associations, surf schools, tourism companies).
Sustainable Development: Regulate economic growth in a way that respects marine and coastal ecosystems, is socially responsible, and aligns with regional development strategies.

During this workshop, the SDRT will present the guidelines and open a constructive discussion with local stakeholders to co-create a lasting model that ensures a safe, attractive, and sustainable coastline.

Surf Safety & First Aid Workshop with Stowarzyszenie Morena

Friday, October 24, Saturday, October 25, Sunday, October 26, 2025 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm

As part of Taghazout Surf Expo 2025, a special First Aid workshop will be delivered by Stowarzyszenie Morena, an organization from Poland. Based in Gdańsk and active for over 20 years within Erasmus+ and other European programs, Morena specializes in youth training, educational workshops, and civic initiatives.
Bringing this international expertise to Morocco, Morena will enrich the FRMS Master Class program with a three-day workshop designed specifically for surf instructors. Topics include: identifying potential hazards, intervention and rescue methods, and the basics of first aid.
Participant selection will be managed directly by the Moroccan Royal Surfing Federation (FRMS).

Taghazout Surf Expo Junior Challenge – Powered by FRMS, Nomad Bay, Soöruz, Hurley & Zeus Surfboards

Saturday, October 25, 2025 (time depending on conditions)

For the very first time, Taghazout Surf Expo hosts an official competition 100% dedicated to young talent. Selected by the Moroccan Royal Surfing Federation (FRMS), 18 surfers under the age of 18 (6 girls and 12 boys) will compete in a spectacular contest to win sponsorships with Soöruz, Hurley, and Zeus Surfboards. On the program: an afternoon of style and creativity, where each participant must impress the jury with their best tricks. Participants of the FRMS Master Class “How to Become a Competition Judge” will also take part in the evaluation, alongside experienced judges. With this premiere event, the Surf Expo launches what is set to become a new tradition—growing with each edition and revealing the surf stars of tomorrow. Come cheer, encourage, and applaud the next generation of Moroccan surfers in a festive and inspiring atmosphere!
